A Realistic Self-Care Routine for Busy Mums & the Importance of Showing Up for Yourself

Amidst the hustle and bustle of motherhood, it's crucial to carve out time for yourself. In this journal post, we'll explore a practical self-care routine tailored for busy mums, with a twist – incorporating moments that embrace the reality of parenting.

Join me as we discover the significance of showing up for yourself and find joy in the little, everyday moments.

  1. Leave the chores alone while baby is napping: Embrace the chaos! Instead of waiting for the baby to nap, involve them in your chores. Turn folding laundry into a game or make cleaning a shared experience. Or if your baby is little enough, have them in a sling while you do the chores. Use nap time as YOUR time - read a book, call a friend, have a cup of tea, watch some TV. This advice was an absolute game changer for me.

  2. Holiday Day: Designate a day each week as your "Holiday Day." Forget about the to-do list and admin tasks. Focus solely on having fun with your little one. Whether it's a mini indoor picnic, playing games, or going for a woodland walk, let this day be a sanctuary of joy.

  3. Child's Pose Before Bed: After putting your little one to sleep, indulge in a calming Child's Pose. It's a gentle yoga pose that helps release tension and prepares your mind and body for a restful night. Take a few moments for yourself, relishing the quiet before bedtime. Definitely do this one on you own, or else you might have kiddies climbing on for a piggy back!

  4. Early Morning Mindfulness: Rise 15 minutes before the household awakens. Use this quiet time to sip your morning coffee, breathe deeply, and set positive intentions for the day. This mindful start can be a grounding foundation for the day ahead. The calm before the chaos!

  5. Poo in Peace: We've all been there! Turn the daily necessity into a moment of solitude. Create a relaxing atmosphere in the bathroom – light a scented candle, play soft music, or simply enjoy the silence. It's a small but impactful way to claim a few minutes of uninterrupted self-time. Not only this, but our bowels love it when we can fully relax and let go (instead of being interrupted by your toddler trying to put your toothbrush in the loo, as mine regularly does!)

Why Showing Up for Yourself as a Mama Matters:

As a mama, you are the heartbeat of your family. Your well-being is intrinsically tied to the harmony of your household. When you show up for yourself, you're not just indulging in moments of self-care; you're replenishing your energy, nurturing your mental health, and reinforcing your resilience.

By prioritising your needs, you model the importance of self-love and self-respect to your children. It's not a selfish act but an essential one, ensuring that you can continue to give your best to those you love. Remember, a well-nurtured mama is the cornerstone of a thriving family.

Self-care is not about grand gestures but about weaving moments of love and rejuvenation into your everyday life. By incorporating these realistic practices into your routine, you're not just showing up for yourself; you're embracing the beauty of motherhood in all its facets.
